Day 28 - First favorite book or series obsession

Baby Sitter’s Club. Back in the day (elementary school) I tried to read every book. I did a report on the author. Even watched the terrible TV adaptation. I was also dorky enough to read the first chapter (basically the same character/basic plot dump) in every book just incase some small new detail was worked in and 'zomg, don't want to miss that!'. The only thing I missed out on was the movie.

For the uninitiated, it was a late 80s-2000 book series based on 6-10 young teens who babysat. Mostly girly slice of life hijinks. With some very cardboard flat protagonists. But hey, lady fiction centered around ladies most of the time, it was novel enough. Well until I discovered anime, and omg ladies can fight demons without the whole 'b-but you're a girl'? (Or in the case of magical girl genre, being a girl is a prerequisite.) :O

Day 19 - Mandatory swimsuit post

To see more Fukumoto characters in bathing suit glory, this parody MAD.

I really wanted to use this pic (sorta NSFW/Not safe for eyes & sanity), but they actually aren't wearing swimsuits.

Day 27 - If a book contains ______, you will always read it (and a book or books that contain it)!

Steampunk/Fantasy outside of the Western Europe mold/Awesome Lady Leads

Feel free to rec based on this stuff.

As for recs~

Steampunk & Awesome Lady Leads: Larklight Trilogy/Arcadia Snips and the Steamwork Consortium. I've gabbed lots about them in past meme posts.

Fantasy Outside Disney-Europe Model: The only one I can remember is The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin. To be honest this entire book is a big step away from the standard fantasy fare as its a big deconstruction of the 'what happens when a small time person suddenly becomes an heir to the big empire's throne' along with introspective stuff like the difference between gods and humans and the lady protag's mommy issues. IDK, I like it but I can see why others wouldn't so just putting it out there for those who may be interested.

No wait, there's The Silver Phoenix by Cindy Pon which is basically fun/cheesy Wuxia.

And those two books also have awesome lady leads.

Day 18 - Something moe

For real, Pokemon Gijinka, human cyndaquil edition. I really like cyndaquil. @_@

Book Meme 24/25 - Anime Meme 15-17

Life
Finished Howl's Moving Castle. The ending was pretty cute and cheesy. Though NGL, I do like in the movie how the protag and witch became friends. But the romance makes more sense in the book so~

Rereading through Girl Genius. It is amazing how well written and drawn this comic is. I've reread it several times and keeping finding new little hints and stuff on the pages or in the panels. I really should buy some volumes.

Also, apparently Squenix is launching an online site to read manga. This interests me greatly as I can finish Full Metal Alchemist/start on Soul Eater and not have stacks of books just sitting around.

Day 24 - Best quote from a novel
Already did this in Day 9.

Day 25 - Any five books from your "to be read" stack
  • The entirety of the Sally Lockhart series
  • Chris Wooding’s Broken Sky series
  • The Magical Misadventures of Prunella Bogthistle by Deva Fagan
  • Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin
  • The Siege of Macindaw by John Flanagan

Day 15 - Post a cute Neko-girl
Day 16 - Post a kigurumi cosplay of your favorite anime character

Don't care for either. Weeaboo heresy I know.

Day 17 - Favorite tsundere

Altessa (the one with the subtle tiara) from Fushigiboshi no Futagohime. Aside from her tsundereness (aimed at pretty much anyone besides her family); she's also a loving sister, perfectionist, determinator and a bit of a cuckoocloudlander (but she tries to suppress her power level). She grows up a lot over the course of the show without completely becoming a different person. Its a natural growth that's really fun to watch. She has many crowning moments of awesome after the halfway point of the show, but my favorite is the Best Artist Princess episode.

Day 23 - Most annoying character ever (spoilers also in white text)

Everyone in this book. I will give this books props on being different and a bit more realistic than your average paranormal romance. I still hated the entire cast though. Especially the protag.

I'd rather not. /fuddy duddy

Day 14 - Current (or most recent) anime wallpaper

Its pokemon anthropomorphic children of various 2nd generation mons. I.e. Chikorita, Totodile, Cyndaquil, Flygon and Sentret if they were human kids instead of pokemon. By the awesome sanikoko and you can see the picture here.

Day 11 - Favorite mecha series

Cheap answer I know, but this is pretty much a love letter to the early mecha I grew up with. To me it epitomizes them all, lovingly snarking and adding its own spin to the genre (though this show can be very sad and srs). Also deconstruction in some respects.

Coming in a very close second is Gunbuster. Old school yet still awesome. Ladies kicking ass and forming super tight bonds.

Day 18 - Favorite beginning scene in a book

To avoid another Arcadia Snips reference (which begins with a lady scientist one upping her cohorts with a pig-shaped dirigible, when pigs fly indeed) is the beginning to...

One of the funniest vampire slayings I've read. Which means a lot as I generally am not a fan of the vampire/werewolf mythos.

Day 8 - Most epic scene ever

*insert gratuitous Gurren Lagann reference here*

To this day I hear the song that goes with this in my head.

Gunbuster/Top wo nerae spoilers )

Day 9 - Saddest anime scene
FMA, old school - does this count as a spoiler anymore? )Shikabanehime death spoiler )
This kissing in Birdy the Mighty Season 2 (too lazy to get a pic). Basically its where you know everything is going to hell. (Actually even the kiss scene in season one is kind of sad. Never kiss in this anime!)

Anime Meme Day 6/7, Book Meme 15-17

BookMeme
Day 15 - Your "comfort" book
Day 16 - Favorite poem or collection of poetry
Day 17 - Favorite story or collection of stories (short stories, novellas, novelettes, etc.)

Skipping these since I don't really do this. Yes I am a pleb. Don't care.

Days 15-17 - A book I should've mentioned because its awesome but I forgot because I am a dunce

Catheryne Valente's The Orphan's Tales series. Its a winding story filled with stories that all interconnect. Painted is a very complex, living world with a variety of characters that seem as if they belong from some fairytale. The writing is pretty too. What you get is a fantasy story that stretches across our world's myths/legends while adding a bit of its own to the mix. Highly recommended if you like retold fairytales, or modern stories (though not a modern setting) with a fairytale vibe.

Anime Meme
Day 6 - Most annoying anime character

Soul Eater's BlackStar

I know he's supposed to be a parody. And I admit, he has his moments with Mifune or Tsubaki. However during the comedy bits I hate this guy. I even hate his voice.

Day 7 - Favorite anime couple

Day 14 - Favorite character in a book (of any sex or gender)

Arcadia Snips

A crazy awesome thief/escape artist, who does what needs to get done, and does it well. Clever, independent, assertive, aggressive and not in an obnoxious way. And while she has daddy issues, she refuses to let them define her. She is just an awesome, well written character that comes off more as a person than not.

Wish - Squirtle Kamina

Day 13 - Favorite childhood book OR current favorite YA book (or both!)

Stinky Cheese Man picture

The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales by Jon Scieszka. This was my gateway into fractured/retold fairytales. There's a 70% chance this book is still in my attic. The art (its a picture book) is actually pretty spiffy too.

Day 4 - Anime you’re ashamed you enjoyed

Probably the bulk of the stuff I watched in the early 90s since it was terribly cheesey, horribly dubbed, awful writing, and the art/animation wasn't that good. But I'll pick my top choice.

Shinzo/Mushrambo

Basically Planet of the Apes Furries with Superpowers with time changing shenanigans. Not as cool as it sounds.

Anime Meme Day 3 - anime crushes

Day 3 - Your anime crush

Minai Ruo of Shikabane Hime. She's a kind, quiet and sweet girl. And she fights undead demon spawn by PUNCHING them in THE FACE. Unfortunately she tends to get stuck with shitty guys. Apparently the 13th DVD special episode is about her so I must go watch that now (didn't realize it was out yet).

Adele of Victorian Romance Emma. Reserved, serious, and dedicated to her job. Her moments of opening up are pretty awesome in a subdued way.

Anime Meme Day 2 - my favorite anime list, or 90% girls kicking srs ass anime

Anime Meme
Day 2 - Favorite anime you’ve watched so far

I'm going to do my top 15 because I really can't pick just one. If that makes me a big cheater than so be it.

To be honest, the biggest criteria of these picks is if I feel emotion just by thinking about it years later. My list is in alphabetical order as opposed to numerical.

Aim for the Top! Gunbuster (Or just Gunbuster in some parts of the world)

Two lady leads (and one super awesome dude), mecha and a space operaish touch (though only 3 episodes long so not sure if it counts?). A bit dated in some regards (can you imagine a black hole at the center of the galaxy? pure chaos!) but there's still a lot of heart and moving moments in this anime. We see the growth of two young women and their awesome kickassness. The pace is a bit slower than much of the following, but this OVA is a classic for a reason.

Birdy the Mighty: Decode (Second Season)

Season one creates the world, the various plot strands and what note. Season two picks up the pace, brings everything to an end, but as we know everything circles back on itself so its not really the end. The action, the story, the characters, its all amazing. And probably one of the best examinations of racism (albeit of the fantastic kind) that I've seen in awhile.

Digimon Tamers

Lol Digimon. While this show is either one you love or hate (at least according to Digimon fandom), I wholeheartedly loved this show. It shook up a lot of the conventions set in the previous two series (so if did like those conventions you might've hated this season). It started with a smaller cast, allowing more character development. And I loved those characters so. A sensitive leader, a cool nerd, a tsundere girl not afraid to be extremely aggressive and strong. Also the plot was more cohesive, darker, and thoughtful. Digimon heresy here, but this was my favorite season, shortly followed by the fifth (which is also darker and plays with conventions). Also this cartoon taught me the meaning of girl crushes (Ruki) and OTPs (Ruki and Ryo) which is the most important lesson anyone can learn. And it also drew me into the dark world of subs. Actually this show is probably what started me on the path of anime fandoms and fangirling.

Day 10 - A book you thought you wouldn’t like but ended up loving

The Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway. I really should hate this book since its really just a man fishing. But idk I just really like Hemingway's writing style. I also got caught up in the manly struggle and what not. I wish I could write more but its been a lifetime and a half since I read this book and I could very well hate it now. I just remember tensing up since it was English class and all, then bam! Manly tears.

Day 1 - Very first anime

Its a toss up between this:

Speed Racer/Mach Go Go Go for the uninitiated.

Or this:

I watched the G-Force version (original is Gatchaman if I recall correctly).

Its official, I'm an anime geezer. On a serious note, its funny how these series have shaped my anime tastes. I generally love stuff with mech, fight scenes, tenable grasp on reality, and a certain amount of cheesiness.
